Retirement dinner for Professor Hugh Taylor AC (1966)

The Ormond College Dining Hall was the setting for the retirement dinner of Melbourne Laureate Professor Hugh Taylor AC (1966).

Professor Taylor’s extended Indigenous Eye Health Unit (IEHU) family came together on 2 December to celebrate and give thanks and congratulations to their leader honouring his retirement on 31 December 2022 and his appointment as Emeritus Professor in 2023.

Professor Taylor was joined by over 100 family, friends and colleagues. Speakers included The Hon Barry Jones AC, Trevor Buzzacott OAM and Dr Kate Taylor on behalf of Hugh’s family. A surprise video provided additional messages from Hugh’s colleagues.

The evening was exciting and joyous and a fitting celebration of Hugh’s extraordinary career, most recently working towards the goal to achieve eye health and eye care equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia.

Professor Taylor, in response, was gracious and appreciative and in particular paid tribute to his wife Liz and his family; reminding everyone, of course, that ‘there was still more work to do!’
